It's been over a week now in Kenya and time is flying! We have learned a ton in the days we have been here, but know we are just scratching the surface on our understanding of the culture.
Our internet connection is spotty at most (it took us about 20 minutes to login to blogger) so this update is going to be some short and sweet comments on last couple of days…we will start posting more pictures and updates come mid-September and more consistent internet.
- We enjoyed at 9 hour drive from Nairobi to Mombasa, weaving through African traffic on a one-lane highway and even spotting a couple giraffe outside of Tsavo National Park.
- That evening we arrived in Msambweni to find our beach house accommodations welcoming (super cheap for an amazing beachfront house), the view of the Indian Ocean spectacular, and a fresh cooked red snapper dinner to eat – head, fins, and all!
- Sunday, we were blessed to worship with the local ELCK congregation in Msambweni. The service only lasted over 2 hours, and it was a unique and special experience to worship God in another culture and language.
- Monday we accompanied Shauen and Elies (a local church worker helping coordinate the Bible camps) to buy food and supplies for the first camp spot, Faraja Children’s Home in Wema. During some down town we even bargained for some local, fresh sugar cane, but we definitely need to work on our bargaining tactics so we don’t always pay the mzungu (white person) price
- Tuesday we had similar stops to Monday, but also strapped two 2,300 liter water tanks to the top of the Land Cruiser and delivered them to the second children’s camp site, Mwenzamwenye. We even got a special tour by about 10 or more of the town children of places like their school and church. They were shy at first, but quick to stare and laugh at our pronunciation of Swahili words we attempted to say.
- The group from Missouri will arrive tomorrow, and we are excited to begin this outreach project.
