Halloween in Kenya

Today is the day American kids don on the best candy-eliciting costumes they can piece together and eat themselves sick with fun-sized Snickers and Laffy Taffy. For those of you that love this spooky holiday, we are sad to report that it remains in obscurity to nearly everybody in Kenya. After explaining traditions such as trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, and bobbing for apples, we left many of our Kenyan friends utterly confused and thinking Americans are crazy. Good thing we left our costumes at home today and guess we won't be expecting any trick-or-treaters tonight! While the rest of the country is going on as usual today, we did make little bit of our own fall/Halloween spirit with our dark green (the only color they come in here) Kenyan pumpkin from the market we carved.

This morning was also spent much differently than any other Halloween before. We somehow managed to get up at 5:30am from our comfortable accommodations at the Rondo Retreat Center in the Kakamega Rainforest, and take the 2-hour hike to see the sunrise atop of the forest's highest hill. The amazing view was well worth the lost sleep.
