READ

The American Library Association (ALA) has been running a marketing campaign to promote reading for several years now. Undoubtedly you've seen READ posters in schools, libraries, book stores, and a variety of other places, directly encouraging everyone to read. After all if all these cool celebrities and athletes read, why wouldn't you want to read as well. This campaign does fight against stereotypes that reading is only for bookworms. In fact anyone can find literature which interests them and engages the mind in imagination and creativity.

Well READ posters haven't made it to the parts of Kenya we've seen, but thanks to some resources made available by supporters, and the reestablishment of afternoon read alouds, we are seeing some fruits from our literacy work at the Lutheran Non-Formal Center. While Tim comes out to where the students meet to read each day after lunch, recently some of the students have taken the initiative to read to their classmates out loud after they are all finished eating and are waiting for Tim to appear. Some have brought the few books they have from home and others are reading the ones they recently purchased through the Look for a Book grant.

This response encourages the work Tim is doing with literature and we hope the students will continue taking time to share story books even if we are not around to lead it.
